Area Code 321 History and Coverage
In 1999, 321 entered the Florida numbering plan as the state’s first overlay area code, initially sharing the 407 territory. That arrangement did not last. The code was later converted into a geographic area code through a split, with 321 assigned to Brevard County and 407 retained for the inland portion of the former service area. This sequence is unusual because 321 began as an overlay before receiving its own defined boundary.
Before splitting from area code 305 in 1988, area code 407 was established to cater to the needs of the growing metropolises in Florida that required new numbering resources. In the late 1990s, area code 407 occupied a large chunk of east-central Florida by linking inland areas to the Atlantic coast county. Splitting Brevard off the area resulted in Brevard being assigned an exclusive area code while area code 407 continued to operate in Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties.
