Area Code 407 History and Coverage

Area code 407 was assigned in 1988 through a geographical split from 305 that covered a greater part of Florida. The introduction of the new number range was necessary due to the increased need for telephone numbers in central Florida separate from the southeastern peninsula of the state. Initially, 407 also stretched to the east and included Brevard County and the Space Coast. This changed in 1999 when 321 was introduced through another geographical split, taking the Brevard County. In 2001, 321 was introduced as an overlay to the remaining area of 407, so both area codes serve the same central Florida territory.

The current area of 407 is located mostly in Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties with some coverage of Lake and Volusia counties. It consists of an inland strip determined partly by Interstate 4. The coast of the Atlantic Ocean falls outside the territory of the area code as a result of the Brevard County split. It consists of highly developed commercial and tourist zones of southwest Orange County and established neighborhoods to the north in Seminole County. The further development of central Florida contributed to the increase in the need for numbering resources after the assignment of 407.
