Area Code 323 History and Coverage

In 1998, 323 was designated in California through the geographic partitioning of the established 213 numbering plan. The new division reduced 213 to a small, concentrated geographic footprint while covering most of the adjacent inner urban geographic area with 323. In the series of numbering plans adopted throughout Southern California since the original designation of 213 in 1947, 213 was originally allocated as one of the initial set of area codes in use at that time and was previously much broader in geographic coverage area than it had become. Population growth and the development of telephone and wireless services increased the demand for number capacity in the dense interior of Los Angeles County.

In 2017, 213 and 323 became an overlay couple, where both numbers were allowed to be assigned in the same geographical space rather than maintaining a separation due to the old boundary. This means that the two area codes now occupy the same geographic coverage but with distinct numbering plans. The geographic area covered by both numbers comprises of the urbanized regions of Los Angeles County excluding the San Fernando Valley, South Bay, and eastern San Gabriel Valley regions.
