Area Code 213 History and Coverage
Area code 213 was issued in 1947 as one of the original NANP area codes of California. Its initial geographic area was much bigger than today's, spanning most of Southern California until increasing population and expansion of telephone coverage led to several geographic divisions of the code. Codes 714 and 805 were established in 1951 and 1957 respectively, followed by 818 in 1984. Another couple of reductions resulted in codes 310 in 1991 and 323 in 1998. Over time, these actions limited the geographic extent of area code 213 to the central urban area of Los Angeles County instead of a wider area of earlier times.
The division from 323 made the current extent of 213 relatively small with 323 covering almost all the surrounding regions. In 2017, the boundary between the two codes was eliminated by creating an overlay, which allows both 213 and 323 serving the same area. The California Public Utilities Commission later granted the status of an overlay area code of that region to 738 in 2023. The history of area code 213 reflects the development of the Southern California telephone coverage, starting from a single code and dividing again and again in expanding regions like San Fernando Valley and Westside.
