Area Code 324 History and Coverage

Area code 324 was launched in 2024 as an overlay to 904 numbering-plan area without any geographic expansion of the coverage area. The area code 324 was among the areas that witnessed decades of shrinking coverage of 904 as compared to its original coverage area in most of northern Florida. For instance, 904 was derived from 305 in 1965 which covered the whole of the area codes in Florida. In addition, in 1995, 352 was split off from 904 and 850 in 1997 and 386 in 2001. All the above splits were done within the 904 numbering plan and not overlays.

In the 2020s decade, 904 had become small enough to cover the coastal and some inland areas of Florida's northeastern coast. Due to the increase in the population and use of mobile services, there was a high demand for telephone numbers. Thus, the introduction of 324 overlaid was done to cater for that requirement without expanding its geographic boundaries. Both the 324 and 904 areas are under Eastern Time.
