Area Code 904 History and Coverage

904 was assigned in 1965 following the division of the original Florida numbering plan area of 305 to include Northern Florida. At its inception, area code 904 spanned over a large geographical area within North Florida, at a time when Florida was characterized by fewer area codes and large regional telephone service areas.

Changes in geographical coverage occurred in the 1990s as other codes were carved out of 904 to cater to other regions of Florida. In 1995, a portion of 904 was divided to become area code 352 covering most of north central Florida, while the next year, the 850 split created another area code for the Panhandle region and Tallahassee area. Another carve out was done in 2001 to create 386 serving parts of east-central and north central Florida, leaving 904 limited to the Northeast corner of Florida.

The current geographic coverage of area code 904 spans the coastal and inland towns from Nassau County through St. Augustine, serving the entire territory of Duval, Clay and St. Johns counties. An overlay was approved by the Florida Public Service Commission in the wake of increasing demands for telephone numbers with 324 becoming the new overlay code for the same area. The 324 code started operations on February 26, 2024.
