Area Code 325 History and Coverage

Texas established the 325 area code as part of the 2003 split of the 915 numbering-plan area into 915 (which kept the original plan's far west of Texas around El Paso) and 325 for the inland area of West Texas. It was a geographic split and not an overlay: The 915 numbering plan area covered a much broader territory before the split in 2003, covering a vast territory in far West Texas which extends further inland. Before then, 915 had covered the entire area for several decades prior to the split.

In terms of the North American Numbering Plan, the split led to the formation of 325 into its own geographic numbering-plan area, enabling separate management of the number resources for the different territories. The boundaries reflected the delineation of the far west centered around El Paso and the interior parts of West Texas. The area code covers the Big Country and Concho Valley and moves on to the Rolling Plains and Edwards Plateau regions. The territory of the area code is mostly in the Central Time Zone. The area consists of numerous county seats located between vast tracts of land and not a continuous urban market. The eastern limit of the 325 area code territory is in the Brownwood area of Brown County.
