Area Code 915 History and Coverage

Area code 915 was introduced in 1947 when it formed part of the North American Numbering Plan. The original boundaries of the area code were much larger than those currently in place since they covered an extremely wide part of western Texas which consisted of vast desert lands and few big cities.

The geographical split of 1957 saw area code 806 introduced to cover the northern part of the previous territory of 915 area code. While 806 now included the Panhandle and South Plains regions including the city of Lubbock, 915 remained covering the southern and western parts of the state. There was another geographical split of area code 915 that happened in 2003 where 432 became the name of the new area code.

This new area code covered the areas of Permian Basin, Midland-Odessa, Big Bend country and Trans-Pecos. The current boundaries of 915 are a reflection of how narrow the service region for 915 has become since these two geographical splits.
