Area Code 326 History and Coverage

Area code 326 came into existence in 2020 as an overlay to the 937 numbering plan area in southwestern Ohio. In an overlay system, a second code is superimposed on an already established geographic area, unlike in a split system where an existing area is divided to serve two geographic areas. Code 937, which precedes code 326, was created in 1996 through a split from 513, which used to serve a considerably larger geographic area in southwestern Ohio. The introduction of 326 thus comes 24 years after the implementation of the 937 code. This sequence is typical in any NANP situation whereby a numbering plan needs to add a code without altering the boundaries of the existing code.

The original 937 area covers much of the Miami Valley and the Great Miami River corridor, with Interstate 75 serving as one of the main North-South highways of the region. Some of the other cities covered by the code include Springfield, Xenia, Troy, Sidney, and Greenville among others and the counties around them. The area covered is a place where river corridors and highway routes have served to connect county seats and industrial centers for many years. Area code 326, therefore, uses the already established geography to provide service.

The telecommunications network was designed in such a way that the old code is maintained while at the same time adding new capacity within the same geographic area. There was only split from 513 in 1996 to form the 937/326 system.
