Area Code 937 History and Coverage
Area code 937 became active on September 28, 1996, as a result of splitting Ohio’s area code 513 geographically. At that time the demand for new telephone numbers increased and a new numbering area was established for inland portion of southwest Ohio.
The area’s territory was formed as Miami Valley and includes the Dayton-Springfield region, Troy, Xenia, Urbana, and Piqua. It unites the territory of Montgomery, Greene, Clark, Miami and other counties, consisting of both urban centers and suburbs. In the result of splitting, area code 513 began serving the Cincinnati-based part of southwest Ohio.
The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio allocated area code 326 on May 2018 in order to relieve area code 937 because of forecasts showing a shortage of available telephone numbers. Area Code 326 began to operate on March 8, 2020, as an overlay of area code 937 in the same geographical service area.
