Area Code 327 History and Coverage
The overlay of 327 became active in 2024 within the numbering-plan area of Arkansas's existing 501 area code following exhaustion of numbers available in 501. In the process of implementation, the new area code did not create a separate territory within the previous one but provided an extra area code without changing the geographical boundaries of the earlier plan. In fact, the need for more numbers does not depend solely on the population of the region as other types of communication equipment also consume numbers from the common pool.
Area Code 501 was established at the initial 1947 North American Numbering Plan for use across the whole state. Afterwards, two new area codes were introduced by splitting the area code 501 geographically and creating new territories for 479 and 870. As a result, the current area code became relevant for the central part of the state and was overlayed by 327. The region where 327 is applicable covers the Arkansas River valley extending southwest towards Hot Springs. In this case, a new code is provided throughout the existing territory rather than allocating it to the new one.
