Area Code 870 History and Coverage

Area code 870 became available in April 1997 through a geographic split of Arkansas’s 501 numbering plan area. Initially, area code 870 covered much of the northwestern portion of the state; this territory later became area code 479 in January 2002, making the area code 870 jurisdictional to most of the Delta, the northeast of Arkansas, the southern part of the state, and central-north parts of Arkansas. Area code 870’s elongated coverage area includes a number of distinct economic areas of Arkansas including agriculture in counties along the Mississippi river, Ouachita forest industry, and communities along the border between Arkansas and Louisiana.

The next major numbering change came in February 2024, when 327 began operating as an overlay across the 870 service area. This arrangement retained 870 as an established Arkansas code while adding another source of telephone numbers for the same territory. Within the North American Numbering Plan, 870 is part of Arkansas’s progression from a single statewide 501 code, assigned in 1947, to several geographic numbering areas. The Mississippi River forms much of the eastern edge of the 870/327 territory.
