Area Code 330 History and Coverage
Area code 330 became operational in 1996 via a geographic split from 216, which had covered a larger area of northeastern Ohio. It has been created by the normal NANP procedure - splitting of an existing numbering plan area to provide additional numbering capacity for it. The boundary of the area code covered the inland area east and south of the Cleveland metropolitan area, extending towards Pennsylvania border and Mahoning Valley. Industrial and small railroad towns dominated this territory that didn't follow county or metro boundaries.
Another area code 234 was overlaid in 2000 onto 330 area code territory. Unlike splitting, overlay means keeping the existing geography intact and creating an additional numbering code in the same area. Thus, additional numbering capacity could be provided without creating a second geographical area. In the Mahoning Valley steel production and heavy industry played particularly important role during twentieth century while other areas of the region were based on manufacturing, agriculture and county seat communities. The western boundary of the area code stretches into the eastern Mahoning Valley and communities at the border of the state.
