Area Code 216 History and Coverage

Created in 1947, 216 is one of the four original NANA area codes in Ohio. At the time of creation, its boundary covered a larger part of the northwestern Ohio comprising an extensive area that started from Lorain and went all the way to Youngstown. This area code configuration reflects the telephone geography of this region in mid-twentieth century, where one area code can cover industrial cities, communities at the coast of Great Lake Erie, and northern counties.

As the demand increased, further splits occurred in order to cover smaller territories. In 1996, area code 330 received the southern portion of the former 216 area code covering Akron, Canton and Youngstown. A year later, area code 440 received the eastern and western parts of the rest of the territory. These two splits reduced the large coverage of northeast Ohio of area code 216 to the much smaller area in the center of this region.

Area code 216 history is linked with the history of Greater Cleveland metropolitan area, including industrial zones and suburbanization of the region, and the increasing telecommunication demands in this area. Adjacent area code 440 covers most of suburbs and lakeshore regions outside the central part of the county, and 330 continues southward to Akron and Canton.
