Area Code 350 History and Coverage
Area code 350 came into operation on November 28, 2022, serving as an overlay to the current 209 numbering plan area in California. The decision of the California Public Utilities Commission to pursue an overlay solution was taken following projections suggesting a future shortage of numbering resources in the existing code. Thus, the commission decided to preserve the code without splitting its geographical area into separate geographically-based codes; hence, 350 and 209 cover the same area. It is not a replacement for the 209 code in that area.
The 209 code is older than that of 350. It was introduced in 1958 as a geographic split from the 916 code when the numbering plan for California was revised to accommodate growth in the state's interior. In 1998, the geographic split formed the 559 code out of the southern part of the 209 code. Consequently, the 209 code was left in its center with an area delimited by the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta, the northern San Joaquin Valley, and some Sierra foothill communities.
The latter introduction of area code 350 is a case where the code is added to an existing geographical territory instead of redrawing its borders. The 1998 border extends from the interior on the Delta side towards the foothill communities of the valley.
