Area Code 209 History and Coverage
Area code 209 was introduced to the numbering plan in California in 1958 as a result of geographic split from 415, which is one of the original three area codes of the state. Its initial territory was larger than it is currently due to the extensive area of central valleys and mountains that were assigned the same code then. In 1997, the second geographic split led to creation of area code 559 and reduced the southern part of area 209 down to Merced area.
The remainder of the area developed around the transport and agricultural zones of the northern San Joaquin Valley as well as extending into Sierra Nevada. It covers the major portion of San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties, extends further into such counties as Amador, Calaveras, Tuolumne, Mariposa, and Merced. The area therefore is rather irregular due to its combination of valley communities, Gold Country foothills and gateway mountain regions. The State of California subsequently implemented area code 350 as an overlay to the same geographic area in November 2022, but without changing its geographic limits.
