Area Code 352 History and Coverage
Area code 352 became operational on December 3, 1995, as a result of a geographic split of the 904 area code in Florida. The split reserved a new number region for an extensive portion of the interior of the state, along with the central counties facing the Gulf of Florida, while the 904 code kept serving the northeastern and other northern portions of Florida.
The introduction of this area code was in the midst of the time when the state experienced an increase in population and development and therefore needed additional numbers. The region consists of the I-75 corridor in Marion County and extends towards the Nature Coast in Citrus and Hernando counties. It also extends to the rolling interior around Sumter County and portions of Lake and Pasco counties, which have a different pattern of development compared to the dense Orlando metropolitan area.
Growth in the form of The Villages in Sumter County added yet another major settlement to the south interior of the code. Agriculture, tourism, retirement homes, and business centers are some of the economic components of the region. The area code 352 has stayed a geographically defined numbering area since the split.
