Area Code 360 History and Coverage

This code was introduced in 1995 via the geographic split of Washington's 206 area code. This expanded the number of codes within the state and thus the code was assigned to western areas of the state not in the central Puget Sound region still using 206. 509 area code continued to be used in eastern Washington, beyond the Cascade Mountains.

The resulting coverage included the Olympic Peninsula, the coastline of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, islands in north Puget Sound, areas near the border with Canada, the state capital region, and the south Puget Sound coastline. This coverage area was based on the geographical layout of the region and not on an urban market area. 360 code thus covers several regional markets that were created through port and highway networks and peninsulas.

In 2017, 564 area code was added as an overlay to 360 territory. An overlay adds a code into the existing coverage area rather than splitting off a part and therefore, the geographical boundary of 360 was maintained. The northern boundary of this geographical area includes the state border with British Columbia.
