Area Code 564 History and Coverage
Area code 564 entered service in 2017 as an overlay on Washington’s 360 numbering-plan area. Its creation added numbering capacity to an existing territory instead of dividing that territory into a separate new code. The underlying 360 area had been established in 1995 through a geographic split from 206, which had previously covered a much larger share of western Washington. This sequence reflects a standard numbering-plan approach: an overlay supplies an additional code while the original geographic boundary remains in place.
When area code 564 was implemented, its area was defined according to the area of the existing 360 area code, but not an independent territory. It covers a large area of the western border of the state other than the Seattle-centric 206 area, starting from the lower Columbia River towards the Canadian border. The lower Columbia River corridor became one of the southern geographic boundaries of the 360 and 564 area as a result of the reorganization in 1995, when 360 area code acquired this territory from 206 area code.
