Area code 361 was introduced in the numbering plan area of Texas on February 13, 1999. Previously, 512 was used as an area code of Texas, which covered a rather large area of central and southern Texas, while 361 received the southeastern part, and 512 remained an area code within the area around the city of Austin. This happened during the period when the number of numbering plan areas had to be expanded due to necessity of the telephone numbers increase. In the report published by the public utility of Texas in 1999, this event was reported as splitting of the areas of Austin and Corpus Christi local access and transport areas, with the planned implementation of the change on October 16, 1999. This was the case of splitting, and not overlay, since 361 became the separate area code.
