Area Code 363 History and Coverage
The area code 363 became active on January 20, 2023 as overlay following the exhaustion of the older 516 numbering plan. The introduction of this area code has come after some period of change in telephone number arrangements on Long Island. Area code 516 had been active since 1951 covering both Nassau and Suffolk counties. However, in 1999, a geographical split was made leading to the use of area code 631 for Suffolk County and retention of area code 516 for Nassau County. This line dividing the two counties has been the important boundary in the two numbering regions.
The New York State Public Service Commission approved the 363 overlay in 2022 as a way of providing additional numbers without splitting the geographic area of Nassau County. While existing numbers with 516 remained, 363 overlay was assigned to the same Nassau County area. This area consists of suburban communities that are well-developed, with their locations being between New York City and Suffolk County line, with shoreline communities along Long Island Sound to the north and South Shore communities to the south.
The new numbering area is reflective of the continuous need for telephone numbers in a county which has well-developed residential and commercial areas, public facilities and transportation connections to New York City. Area code 363 is therefore part of the numbering area of Nassau County defined in 1999 as separate from Suffolk County.
