Area Code 516 History and Coverage

Area code 516 was assigned in 1951 and is the result of geographic split of 914 numbering area of New York. It initially covered all parts of Long Island except for New York City and was divided geographically in such a way to include all suburbs of the peninsula within one area code. The situation was caused by the development of residential areas and transport routes eastwards from Queens.

A second geographic split took effect in 1999, when Suffolk County received area code 631. The change established the present boundary between the two Long Island numbering regions, with 631 covering the county east of the Nassau-Suffolk line. Nassau’s geography is shaped by Long Island Sound along its northern edge and the Atlantic-facing barrier-island shoreline to the south, while its western boundary meets Queens.

In 2023, area code 363 has been assigned as an overlay to the same Nassau County territory. Unlike the geographic split of the area, this split did not form the new geographical boundary and was simply introduced as another area code in the existing service territory. The eastern boundary of the 516 and 363 territory borders Suffolk County at the Nassau-Suffolk county boundary.
