Area Code 380 History and Coverage

Area code 380 became operational as the overlay for the 614 numbering plan area in 2016. This came after a number of modifications on the phone numbering plan that was established many years back. In 1947, the 614 was serving a wider region in central and southeastern Ohio under the original North American Numbering Plan. Thereafter, in 1997, 740 emerged through geographic splitting of 614, making the 614 serve the central Ohio area only.

The overlay provided an addition of telephone numbers in the 614 numbering region owing to the increasing needs in wireless and residential phones. It is not a geographic split of any kind as the 614 numbering territory still holds in its coverage area along with the 380. This region of Ohio is influenced by the interstate highways 70 and 71 and is in the Eastern Time Zone. The numbering territory is close to the wider 740 region that serves the southeastern Ohio region and others.
