Area Code 614 History and Coverage
Area code 614 was assigned in 1947 as one of Ohio’s original North American Numbering Plan codes. Its early territory was substantially larger than it is today, reaching across central and southeastern portions of the state. At the time, Ohio was divided among four original codes: 216, 419, 513, and 614. That arrangement reflected the state’s established telephone geography before later population growth and expanding demand for numbers required revisions.
A significant numbering plan change occurred in 1997 when the geographic split between 614 and 740 separated areas east and south of central Ohio into 740. This included regions within the Appalachian plateau and those close to the Ohio River. In turn, the remaining 614 region remained largely centered on the central Ohio urbanized region.
A second numbering change came in 2016, when 380 was added as an overlay to the same geographic territory as 614. This preserved the existing 614 boundary rather than dividing it again. The two codes are tied to a compact central Ohio numbering region, while 740 continues across much of the former outer territory toward Zanesville, Chillicothe, and the southeastern state line.
