Area Code 385 History and Coverage
Area code 385 became active in 2009 as an overlay area code of 801 in order to provide more numbers but without altering the geographic boundary of 801. Area code 801 was assigned to all of Utah way back in 1947 when the number system in North America was initially organized. Area code 435 was allocated in 1997 through the geographical split of 801 area code in order to provide service for rest of the Utah State except Wasatch Front area.
By the end of the decade, the coverage area of 801 needed another area code. Rather than splitting the area once again into two different areas, a new area code was introduced within the same geographic boundaries of 801, which is 385. Both codes cover the same northern part of Utah which has a lot of housing, business, and communication facilities.
The territory covered by both area codes runs along the Wasatch Front area. This area stretches through the corridor between the Wasatch Range and the Great Salt Lake. It includes the Interstate 15 corridor starting from Ogden to Provo and running through Davis County. The territory is quite distinct from the much larger 435 area which covers most of Utah.
