Area Code 801 History and Coverage

Area code 801 was assigned in 1947, when Utah received a single statewide code under the early North American Numbering Plan. At that time, one code could serve the state’s population and telephone network without a separate regional division. As telephone use and population increased, especially in the state’s main metropolitan corridor, the available numbering supply eventually required a change.

A geographic split in 1997 created area code 435 for most of Utah outside the territory that remained with 801. The split separated the long-established urban concentration near the Great Salt Lake and Wasatch Range from much of the state’s southern, eastern, and western territory. Area code 435 now covers broad rural regions as well as many recreation and tourism destinations beyond the retained 801 service area.

Demand for additional telephone numbers continued to grow with mobile service, business accounts, and other number-based communications. Area code 385 was later added as an overlay covering the same territory as 801, providing another numbering resource without another geographic split. Both 801 and 385 are used in the Mountain Time Zone, while 435 extends across much of Utah’s high desert, canyon country, and southern plateau country.
