Area Code 386 History and Coverage

Area code 386 became available in 2001 through a geographic split from 904, which covered a much larger area in northern Florida. With the splitting of the area codes, area code 904 continued covering Jacksonville and the northeastern parts of Florida while area code 386 gained coverage in parts of the south and west of the remaining area code. This process gave more numbering capacity in an area that was still requiring more numbers in terms of residential, business, and wireless services.

Area code 386 is one of the area codes that has gone through a split from the old 904 rather than an overlay. This situation was brought about by the changes that occurred in the numbering plan for Florida at the time when there were different parts of the state that required more telephone numbers.

The area code covers coastal cities and counties with some rural areas found towards the north central interior of Florida as well as parts around the Suwannee river basin and close to the Georgia state border. Interstates 95 and 75 cross the eastern and northern parts of the area respectively.
