Area Code 402 History and Coverage

Area code 402 was created in 1947 as the single code issued for Nebraska at the early stage of the North American Numbering Plan, with the numbering area covering the whole state due to lower requirements for telephone numbers of an agricultural state. Geographical split occurred in 1954 and resulted in splitting of Nebraska into two areas – 308 for central and western parts and 402 for the more populated eastern part.

Further population growth of the major economic, governmental, educational, and transportation centers in the state increased the demand for numbering resources in the eastern part during the following years. This tendency was especially influenced by the growth of the Platte River Valley, Missouri River border, as well as I-80 corridor in southeastern Nebraska. Instead of dividing this existing numbering area once again, Nebraska introduced area code 531 as an overlay in 2011. Now, both codes share the same numbering area in the east of the state.

The 402 numbering area starts from the Missouri River counties and spreads westwards to communities connected with the Platte River Valley and stretches south to the Kansas border. The rest of the border of the 402 territory is set according to the 1954 split that divided western and central Nebraska from the eastern one.
