Area Code 531 History and Coverage
Area code 531 was launched in 2011 as an overlay of Nebraska's preexisting numbering plan area 402. This code came after many years of reorganization: code 402 was one of the original North American area codes assigned in 1947; at that time, it covered the whole state. In 1954, code 308 was introduced through a geographic split for western Nebraska, while code 402 continued covering the eastern portion of the state. Code 531 is an addition to the existing geographic coverage area defined by 402.
From the perspective of telecommunications, it provided an additional supply of phone numbers within the same division of the state introduced in 1954. Area covered by both codes 402 and 531 includes the Platte River valley, Missouri River counties, and southeast Nebraska close to the Kansas border, as well as northeast Nebraska up north. All those areas match long-established settlement, railroad, and highway corridors that have located Nebraska's main telecommunication facilities in the eastern part of the state. This area operates on Central Time, the majority of Nebraska does so. Code 308 is still the main numbering plan boundary between eastern and western Nebraska.
