Area Code 405 History and Coverage

Assigned in 1947 as one of the original NANP codes, 405 at first included the whole state of Oklahoma. As can be seen from the very initial numbering plan, one code usually covered one entire state. The geographic division of the state took place in 1953, when area code 918 was created for the eastern part of the state.

The 405 footprint changed again in 1997, when a second geographic split established area code 580 for much of western and southern Oklahoma. These divisions reflected the state’s distinct regional patterns, separating the eastern counties from the broad western plains and southern communities nearer the Red River. The territory left under 405 continued to see population growth and increasing demand for telephone numbers through government, education, health care, and commercial development.

An overlay, area code 572, was added to the 405 service area in 2022 as available numbers became more limited. Unlike the earlier changes, the overlay did not alter the geographic boundaries of 405. Area code 580 now extends across much of the state’s west and south, including the Oklahoma Panhandle and communities along the Red River borderland.
