Area Code 572 History and Coverage
Area code 572 was implemented in 2021 as a new addition to the long-standing 405 service area, providing additional numbering resources for the central Oklahoma territory. It came to the region due to ongoing needs for additional phone numbers resulting from increasing population, business activities, cellular services, and other telecommunication device use in central Oklahoma. 405 geographic area was not subdivided for implementing area code 572, and the two codes are overlaid to serve the same geographic territory.
The original 405 area code originated in the North American Numbering Plan in 1947 when all of Oklahoma belonged to this region. Afterward, 918 became an area code for eastern part of Oklahoma, and 580 for much of the rest of Oklahoma. These changes resulted in the reduced area code 405 region.
The geographical boundaries of 405/572 are similar to the latter central part of the state. Area code 572/405 covers Cleveland and Canadian counties. Interstate 35 cuts across the former one. Canadian County sits west of the central metropolitan region, and Cleveland County covers area to the south of Canadian River. Also, Pottawatomie County to the east of the metropolitan area is a part of the same geographical region.
