Area Code 419 History and Coverage

The area code 419 was introduced into the North American Numbering Plan in 1947 in one of the first numbering plan regions created in Ohio state. The geographic territory covered by area code 419 originally was quite extensive, and corresponded more to a state quadrant than to any metropolitan area in the state. The region covers the western part of the Lake Erie basin, the Maumee Valley, as well as the inland territories reaching into north-central Ohio.

Area code 419 did not undergo geographic split for many years. As far as Ohio telecom landscape was evolving with the demand for additional phone numbers growing, the established area code 419 geographic territory was preserved. In 2002, the overlay area code 567 was introduced for the same geographic territory. Area code overlay is the process of introducing a new area code without reducing geographic territory of the original area code.

In this way, 419 was preserved in the territory it was originally covering, while at the same time making another phone numbers resource available in the region. The geographic region consists of different territories of Ohio State: coastal regions near Lake Erie, the industrial valley of Maumee River, the agriculture counties to the west of I-75 and other southern and eastern regions. Western Lake Erie basin remains the most distinctive geographic feature of 419 & 567 service area.
