Area Code 567 History and Coverage

Area code 567 was put into service as of January 1, 2002 as an overlay to the already in use 419 area code. The planning process for the additional area code was revealed in NANPA Planning Letter 249, released on November 7, 2000. An overlay is not a geographic split, and hence, does not result in the creation of a separate number district; 567 and 419 serve the same general area.

The new code added numbering capacity to a long-standing northern Ohio telephone region while leaving the earlier 419 footprint intact. Within the North American Numbering Plan, an overlay places a second area code across an existing service area instead of redrawing its boundaries. That made 567 part of the same regional telecommunications framework that had used 419 since 1947, when 419 was assigned as one of Ohio’s original numbering plan areas.

The shared 419/567 territory follows much of Ohio’s northern and northwestern landscape, touching the Lake Erie shore near Sandusky and extending inland through communities in the Mansfield and Lima areas. Its western edge approaches the Michigan line, while the eastern portion reaches beyond the Sandusky Bay corridor into north-central Ohio.
