Area Code 424 History and Coverage
Area code 424 was introduced as an overlay of 310 in 2006, providing more numbering resources without breaking off a new geographic code from the current one. The earlier 310 code was introduced in 1991 in the split of 213, when the numbering plan of Los Angeles County was divided into smaller service territories. When 424 became available, the western and southern territories of 310 had a great number of residential areas, business districts, entertainment enterprises, and transportation centers. Such density required more telephone numbers within a limited area of Los Angeles County.
The 424 and 310 territory is shaped less by county boundaries than by Los Angeles’s coastal urban pattern. It includes the corridor around Los Angeles International Airport and runs through beachside communities toward the Palos Verdes Peninsula; Santa Catalina Island is also within the shared service area. Inland, the boundary follows portions of the Westside rather than central Los Angeles. This geography reflects the earlier 310 territory after later numbering changes separated other parts of the county, including the 562 split in 1997. The shared region reaches from airport-adjacent El Segundo to Catalina Island.
