Area Code 310 History and Coverage

Area Code 310 has been active since 1991 and has resulted from a split of area code 213 due to the growing need for telephone numbers in Los Angeles County. As a result, the former area got a portion of the coast of the county, whereas 213 remained covering a relatively small central area of Los Angeles County. The creation of Area Code 310 happened at the time when there were some additional challenges in the numbering scheme of Southern California.

Afterwards, another split of 310 happened in 1997 with the establishment of area code 562 that covered Long Beach and most southeastern parts of Los Angeles County. With this division, the former code ended up covering Palos Verdes Peninsula, Catalina Island and the adjacent parts of Los Angeles basin. Another split happened later in 2006 and involved the overlay of area code 424 in order to address ongoing demand without changing the territory of 310.

Currently, the territory belongs to the Pacific Time Zone and includes a relatively developed coast area in the county influenced by the Palos Verdes hills and San Pedro Harbor.
