Area Code 432 History and Coverage
Area code 432 was created in 2003 following a geographic split of area code 915. Before then, 915 covered a much bigger sweep of far West Texas that included areas with different economic and transportation connections. This division left 915 to cover the El Paso area and made 432 to cover the rest of the area.
The new boundary for numbering represented a region affected by the Permian Basin oil industry that had been shaping its development through phases of exploration, extraction, and business activities. Agriculture and ranching are common economic activities in some parts of the service area, outside the basin, and railroads and roads link the scattered communities with the markets in Texas and neighboring states. Interstate 20 represents one of the main east-west arteries of the region and U.S. highways lead southwards towards Trans-Pecos and Big Bend regions.
In relation to its numbering system, 432 is a split code and not an overlay code due to the 2003 division of area code 915. Some of the counties covered by 432 include Reeves, Pecos, and Brewster counties where the land transitions from basin plains to mountain and canyon terrains close to Big Bend National Park.
