Area Code 440 History and Coverage

Area code 440 was introduced in 1997 as a result of the geographical splitting of the old 216 numbering plan area. Such change took place at the time of increasing the need for telephone numbers in Northeast Ohio and the necessity to allocate more numbering capacity than currently provided by 216 numbering area. The 216 number area was one of the original North American Numbering Plan areas since 1947; however, it was partially split earlier in 1996 to introduce area code 330.

The 1997 splitting placed 440 in almost the entire region of the Cleveland-area except the central city and close suburbs. Area code 440 covered the territory of both suburban and county seat cities, the shoreline of Lake Erie, and inland part of northeastern Ohio. Important part of the eastern boundary included Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula counties, while the western part of area code covered Lorain County.

Another number expansion happened in 2024 with the implementation of area code 436 as an overlay for the 440 coverage area. The move maintained the same geographic area boundaries and generated an extra source of numbers. The resulting 440/436 number service area covers the Greater Cleveland exurbs from Lake Erie shoreline inland toward Geauga County and Ohio/Pennsylvania borders.
