Area Code 442 History and Coverage

Area code 442 was introduced in 2009 as an overlay for 760, following the numbering relief decision for a large and geographically diverse region of Southern California. Area code 760, in turn, was introduced in 1997 by dividing area 619 into two, where a considerable portion of the territory remained as 619 and associated with the San Diego region.

In 2009, when another geographic split was to take place, it became necessary to redraw the boundaries in the region that covers the inland desert, mountain, and coastal regions of Southern California. An overlay method was chosen to maintain the existing 760 plan area and introduce 442 into this same numbering plan area. Thus, both of these codes are members of the same overlay family, as 442 did not create a separate district within 760.

This joint territory covers a wide range of geographic features and localities. It includes the northern parts of San Diego County, the areas of Colorado Desert in the Imperial County, areas of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, and communities reaching the eastern Sierra region. This map corresponds to the extent of the 760 numbering plan area rather than one particular county. The time zone of this area is the Pacific Time, including desert areas in proximity to the Arizona border and eastern Sierra parts of California.
