Area Code 760 History and Coverage

Area code 760 was launched on March 1997 by means of geographic split from area code 619. The region it was allotted was formerly part of different Southern California numbering plans, which included 213 to 714 and then 619 due to increase of the Californian population and telephone system. As a result of the 1997 split, the new region was assigned to parts of San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Kern counties together with all Imperial, Inyo, and Mono counties.

Area code 760 borders correspond to the complex history of development of inland Southern California. The numbering region encompasses well-developed desert regions, mountain areas of eastern Sierra, new Inland Empire regions, and agricultural regions close to the Mexican border. There are big distances and public lands between some of these regions, whereas others are developed alongside main routes, resorts, military installations, and suburban growth regions. Such variety made the 760 region unique geographically in terms of California, since it encompasses the regions around San Diego, Riverside-San Bernardino, and Bakersfield metropolitan areas, as well as regions beyond these urbanized areas.

In order to meet demands for extra phone numbers, the area code 442 was introduced as an overlay in 2009. Area code 760/442 region goes north into Mono and Inyo counties, covering the eastern Sierra and areas adjacent to Death Valley National Park.
