Area Code 478 History and Coverage
Area code 478 became a new code as a result of geographic splitting from 912 in 2000. Prior to that, it was a part of an older code introduced in 1954 as 912, a splitting of the previous Georgia area code 404. This split took place in order to cover the southern part of the state, and in 2000, 912 underwent another narrowing, this time giving rise to 478. After this splitting, 912 remained covering most of southeastern Georgia, including the coast.
This is a split, not an overlay; codes are assigned to different geographical regions, not the same. This split is a part of longer numbering plan history of Georgia, with its original code being 404, followed by 912, and now by 478. Geographically, 478 covers much of the transitional region between Piedmont and Coastal Plain, following portions of Fall Line and extending to the east through the interior of the state, connecting communities by county seats and highways in Middle Georgia.
On the eastern side of this region, Interstate 16 can serve as a geographical reference. The boundaries of the code also cover a territory associated with Oconee River basin and interior counties.
