Area Code 479 History and Coverage

Area code 479 went into effect in 2002 due to a geographic split of the original 501 numbering plan area of Arkansas that took effect when the North American Numbering Plan was introduced in 1947. In this split, 501 remained for the central part of the state, and 479 was created for use in the northern and western portions of the state. This is a geographic split, not an overlay – the two codes have distinct geographic boundaries.

The boundaries of the area code are defined geographically by the topography of the region. The code encompasses the Ozark Plateau region that covers Benton and Washington counties in Arkansas and then stretches southwest to the Arkansas River valley in Crawford and Sebastian counties. It therefore runs from the elevated woodland region in the vicinity of the Missouri border to the lowlands close to the Oklahoma border. Siloam Springs and Bentonville lie within the northern part of the area code, whereas the western border coincides with the state's border with Oklahoma.

Splitting of the 501 area code took place in 2002 and put central Arkansas within 501 and provided a unique area code 479 to the northwest part of the previous area code. In terms of the numbering plan, 479 is connected to a specific geographical part of Arkansas.
