Area Code 501 History and Coverage
501 was designated as an area code back in 1947 when there were only seven area codes in North America. At this time, it covered the entire Arkansas with one code because of the national numbering scheme. Due to population density and growth, highways, business activities and the need for additional numbering led to geographical shifts in the area code.
In 1997, area code 870 was created from the split of area code 501, thus covering the greater portion of northern, eastern, and southern Arkansas and making 501 cover a concentrated central Arkansas territory. There was another split back in 2002, during which 479 was created to serve the northwestern part of the state and cover areas of Fort Smith and Fayetteville.
Currently, the territory of area code 501 includes the Arkansas River Valley counties as well as the surrounding counties with the state capital and covers more than just the Little Rock metro area, including Ouachita foothills and north-central Arkansas. This territory currently reflects two splits that have divided the state into central, northwest and other regions of northern, eastern, and southern numbering territories.
