Area Code 503 History and Coverage

503 area code was introduced in 1947 and it was the first North American Numbering Plan area code for Oregon and covered all of Oregon at first. The one area code covered all communities from the Columbia River to California border until the increased demand for the phone numbers caused a change in the regional codes.

A geographic split took effect in 1995, creating area code 541 for most of Oregon outside the northwest portion of the state. The change confined 503 to Oregon’s northwestern section while 541 took in central, southern, and eastern parts of the state. This was Oregon’s first division of its original statewide numbering arrangement.

Another area code 971 was created in 2000 as an overlay to 503 but not as its replacement. The area code 971 was subsequently extended to the 541 region in 2008 so that it became statewide as well. In terms of geography in the 503 area of Oregon, it covers the lower Willamette Valley, Columbia River boundary, and north coast.
