Area Code 971 History and Coverage

Area code 971 was introduced in 2000 as an overlay within part of Oregon’s 503 numbering-plan territory. Rather than creating a new geographic division, the overlay added numbering capacity alongside the older code. The 503 territory itself had been reduced in 1995, when area code 541 was created through a geographic split serving most of the rest of Oregon. That earlier change left 503 concentrated in the state’s northwest region, while 541 covered central, southern, and eastern areas.

In 2008, the 971 footprint was expanded to cover the full 503 territory. The two codes now share that regional service area, preserving the established boundaries of 503 while providing additional number resources. Within the North American Numbering Plan, overlays are used when an existing code requires more available numbers without another geographic split.

The shared territory extends along the Columbia River near Oregon’s northern border, across sections of the north coast, and toward the western slopes of the Cascade Range. It includes the northern Willamette Valley, where transportation and communications connections have long linked the valley with the lower Columbia corridor.
