Area Code 515 History and Coverage

Area code 515 was allocated to Iowa in 1947 and became one of the original area codes within North American Numbering Plan (NANP) in Iowa. At the time when it was created there were three area codes within Iowa, 319 for eastern part of the state, 712 for western part of the state and 515 for large central and northern part of Iowa. Area code division within NANP in Iowa was made according to the population size and communication area of the state.

The area served by 515 used to be much larger compared to the current territory of the code. The rapid increase in population, the development of business communication, cell phone services, and other communication suppliers caused the growing need for phone numbers at the end of the twentieth century. In March 2000, the Iowa Utilities Board introduced a geographical split of the code. The newly created code 641 received the remaining territory of the former area code, while 515 kept the core area.

This is the first splitting of an area code in Iowa since the implementation of the numbering plan in 1947. This splitting replaced the three-code system of the state and introduced more sophisticated regional distribution. The new code does not overlap with 641 anymore and keeps the area borders introduced by the split.
