Area Code 641 History and Coverage

In 2000, Area Code 641 was created through the process of splitting Area Code 515 for Iowa. The result was that 515 became associated with Des Moines metro area and surrounding central Iowa cities, while 641 received a wide variety of other areas from the original Area Code.

The split reflected the need for additional telephone numbers as residential, business, wireless, and other communications services expanded. Before 641 was introduced, 515 covered a much larger portion of the state and had been one of Iowa’s original North American Numbering Plan codes. Creating 641 divided that earlier service territory rather than adding a second code over the same locations.

The territory of 641 includes separated regions of Iowa that had previously used 515. It covers territories in the north, towards the borders with Minnesota; the central part of the state, except for the vicinity of the Des Moines metropolitan area, and also goes down south, closer to the Missouri border. Communities on such routes as U.S. Highway 18 in the north and U.S. Highway 34 in the south belong to 641 territory.
