Area Code 517 History and Coverage
Area code 517 was assigned to the State of Michigan in 1947 in connection with the implementation of the North American Numbering Plan in the whole nation. The code, together with the others such as 313, 616 and 906, was one of the earliest allocations in Michigan with the coverage of a considerably larger geographical area as compared to the present coverage. The initial coverage was to the central and north-eastern parts of the state with some of the regions covered getting other area codes allocation subsequently. This happened when there was yet no considerable installation of telephone lines and allocation of numbers.
In 2001, an area split resulted in the introduction of 989 code as part of the eastern and northern territories of the 517 area code. 989 was allotted the Saginaw Bay and central northeastern Lower Peninsula communities whereas 517 retained the southern part of the area. This was not a case of an overlay but a code serving a different territory than the old code.
After the change, the 517 boundary was more closely focused on the Lower Peninsula's south-central belt. Its territory reaches toward the Ohio and Indiana state lines, with communities in the Irish Hills and the farm country around Hillsdale forming part of its southern and western reaches. The 989 boundary marks the major historical change in its northern extent.
