Area Code 529 History and Coverage
Area code 529 was set aside for non-geographic 5XX-NXX use in May 2012 and was formally assigned for that purpose on August 29, 2022. Number assignments from 529 began on September 16, 2022, placing it within a dedicated group of resources for services that can connect fixed devices, mobile devices, unattended equipment, and supporting systems.
Area code 500 initially served personal communications services, and the Industry Numbering Committee later designated additional 5XX codes for that category. During 2012, the committee expanded the service description to include machine-to-machine technologies and other non-geographic applications, reflecting the growing use of numbers for connected devices and data-enabled services.
529 was one of 22 codes reserved in the May 2012 expansion. A 2013 action added four more codes to the future resource pool, and the governing rules adopted the title Non-Geographic 5XX-NXX Code Assignment Guidelines. Under that framework, 5XX-NXX resources are assigned to service providers in blocks of 10,000 numbers for non-geographic applications across the North American Numbering Plan.
