Area Code 500 History and Coverage
In 1994, the North American Numbering Plan allocated area code 500 as a service access code for personal communications services. The code received this designation as the telephone networks began to develop a system allowing a number to be associated with an individual's service profile, rather than with a regular local area. Thus, the area code was distinguished from geographic codes, which developed due to population growth, suburbanization, or economic activity in a certain geographic region of the state.
History of the 500 code is related to the emergence of cross-regional telecommunications services, and not with a certain county, metropolitan area, or an interstate corridor. Geographical context of the matter is the entire North American Numbering Plan, comprising the United States, Canada, and several Caribbean regions.
The number administrators extended the description of 5YY code later on.
