Area Code 530 History and Coverage

The creation of area code 530 occurred in 1997 by means of geographic split from 916 because of the need for more telephone numbers in the old 916 territory. While the Sacramento-based 916 continued serving Sacramento and surrounding areas, the northwestern and eastern part received 530. The new area code covered places with distinct settlement features such as agricultural communities from the valley, county seats, college communities, and mountain communities. The communities were not growing at an equal rate, but collectively they needed more numbering capacity than the old arrangement could provide.

The geographic distribution of the area code covers Feather River drainage, the foothills to the east of the valley, and mountains towards Nevada. It goes northward to cover counties near Oregon, while its southward reach includes towns outside the capital region. In the 1990s, there was substantial increase in the business and population of California, which further placed a demand on telephone numbers in the large service territories. The split gave a separate numbering pool for this varied territory without including it in the Sacramento-based area code. The eastern portion includes Lassen and Modoc regions where many towns are closer to Nevada and Oregon than to Sacramento.
